Before oil, pearls were the economic lifeblood of the Arabian Gulf. For centuries, pearl divers — the ghawwas — descended into the warm, shallow waters of the Gulf with nothing but a nose clip and a rope, holding their breath for minutes at a time. Natural Gulf pearls are among the rarest and most prized in the world. Unlike cultured pearls, they form entirely without human intervention, their luminous nacre built up over years of patient growth beneath the Gulf's turquoise waters.
